Colchester News

We have just hosted our 6th student Police Constable on a 3 day community placement at EYS Colchester. During her time with us the student officer, Louise Wallace, worked in the entire tutor groups and took part in delivering sessions. She also went on to external activities and played rounders against the l earners in a local park. She left having gained a lot from the experience and said "The young people that go here (EYS) have helped me understand how people can change their lives with the right organisation helping them as well as a little determination. "A great experience"

Colchester has also booked 19 learners to do the CSCS Card test on 08-07-08. The tests will be carried out on the mobile testing bus which is visiting our premises.

Colchester have also commenced a 6 week decorating course in collaboration with another organisation who work with young people in Essex called Teen Talk. The course is a great success so far and will continue to run every few months for the rest of the year-hopefully! There is also the possibility of expanding the courses to add basic furniture repair and renovation to the menu.

We will pair this up with learners getting their CSCS card to assist them into employment in construction related trades.

Colchester have also started their successful second round of decorating, this course has now began a weekly activity in a local village where EYS have been clearing away and making good of the large garden that had been unused for many years. The EYS learners are clearing it up and making it look good again, in return they have been given approx 50ft of garden to turn into allotments. They intend to be growing vegetables before September and then they will harvest them so learners can use them for sessions relating to Healthy Eating. Excess vegetables will be given to local pensioners.

Nathan Shawcroft

Nathan Shawcroft was an E2E learner in Lowestoft from January 2007, he also became the Administrator in November of the same year. He became a Millennium Volunteer in 2004, and began to work with a local youth club called Kessingland Village Hangout. In that time Nathan became heavily involved with planning and carrying out open days, organising sporting activities and a healthy eating project. He did all of this while battling serious personal issues such as homelessness as well as behavioural and social problems. During this time he also took up a full-time position with E.Y.S.

At the 'Young Suffolk Volunteer of the Year Awards' held in Ipswich on the 19th March 2007, Nathan won two prestigious awards. Firstly he won the 'Young Suffolk Volunteer of the Year' awards. The nominators felt he deserved the award because;

"By getting involved in volunteering Nathan has take control of his personal situation to overcome many of the difficulties he has had to face including homelessness, behaviour issues and personal problems turning very negative experiences into positives. Location: Fitness first and the Gosling sports centre.

EYS staff had great technique both in the gym and on the badminton court however a big up! to the learners whose endurance and stamina on the punch bag and pads far exceeded the staff.

Staff, you were good but you need to get in shape and fast!

Learners, you were something else, alot fitter both physically and mentally! So don't get complacent and look at the staffs techniques and learn! Now apply this method in the classroom!

Teenager is runner-up in Young Citizen of the Year awards

AN 18-year-old Carnforth teenager who became a police cadet after helping to bring a robber who attacked her to justice, has been named as one of the county's top young citizens. Amanda Dean an ex EYS learner, described as "a true ambassador and mentor to young people", was one of two runners-up in the BAE Systems High Sheriff of Lancashire's Young Citizen of the Year Award. Runner Up Amanda Dean At The Awards

A number of other youngsters from our district also received Highly Commended and Commended status in the annual awards.

PC Kath Bromilow nominated Amanda for her outstanding contribution to the Northern Division's Police Cadet Scheme.

"In early 2006 Amanda was a victim of a robbery and although she recognised her attacker she feared for her safety and wouldn't give details to the police," explained Kath.

"Her confidence suffered as a result and she withdrew from the outside world. A few months later her attacker was arrested for similar incidents, and given personal support and guidance Amanda made a statement to the police and he was consequently sentenced.

"With her growing confidence Amanda became a Police Cadet and has been an invaluable member of the team becoming involved most weekends in voluntary crime prevention work.

"Amanda has been an inspiration to all the other cadets and they are all proud of her achievements."

Afghan mission

Michael Corner A soldier from Heysham will be serving Queen and country in Afghanistan when he starts a six month tour there on March 18.

Nineteen-year-old Michael Corner an ex EYS learner from Kingsway will be serving in the war-torn country with 13 Air Assault of the Royal Logistics Corp, the first overseas duty he has undertaken.

Michael will be missed by his mother Denise, younger brother Richard, 14, and disabled sister Toni Lee, aged 22.

However, he will keep in touch with his family and girlfriend Emma Bond via email, letter and telephone.

Michael, a former pupil of Heysham High School, is the first member of his family to join the armed forces and had never even mentioned the subject until fairly recently.

His mum Denise said: "We will miss him but it's what he's trained for."

His friends and family are all so proud of him and he's the only one in the family who's done this.

"I can't even think about it now because it's getting closer and it's very worrying."

I just want to make sure he comes back in one piece.
